Design Technology

At Christ Church, the Design and Technology (D&T) curriculum is designed to inspire pupils to think creatively, work practically, and apply their knowledge and skills in purposeful and meaningful contexts. Through a carefully sequenced curriculum, pupils develop their capability to design, make, and evaluate high-quality products that solve real and relevant problems. The D&T curriculum provides opportunities for pupils to draw upon disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing, and art, ensuring a broad and balanced approach that prepares them for an ever-changing technological world.

Our intent is rooted in the Christ Church’s core values, encapsulated by SCOPE, which underpins all aspects of our curriculum design and delivery.

S – Spiritual

Within Design and Technology, pupils are encouraged to develop a sense of curiosity, creativity, and reflection about the designed and made world. They consider how design influences people’s lives, both historically and in contemporary society, and how innovative thinking can lead to positive change. Through exploring design aesthetics, form, and function, pupils develop an appreciation of human creativity and the spiritual satisfaction that comes from imaginative problem-solving and purposeful creation.

C – Community

Our D&T curriculum promotes a strong sense of community, both within and beyond the federation. Pupils engage in projects that consider the needs of others, developing empathy, collaboration, and social awareness. They are encouraged to design with a sense of responsibility towards their peers, local community, and the wider world. Opportunities to engage with local industry, community projects, and global design contexts foster an understanding of how design connects and contributes to society.

O – Outdoor Learning

The federation values the unique opportunities afforded by outdoor learning. Through D&T, pupils are encouraged to explore the natural environment as both an inspiration for design and a resource for practical investigation. Outdoor learning enables pupils to work in a multi-sensory context, experimenting with materials, mechanisms, and structures in authentic settings. This approach deepens understanding, enhances creativity, and promotes sustainable thinking.

P – Purposeful

Purpose is central to all learning within Design and Technology. Every unit of work is structured around a clear design brief that provides meaning and context for pupils’ learning. Pupils are encouraged to consider the end user and intended function of their products, ensuring that their designs are relevant and useful. By engaging in purposeful, outcome-driven projects, pupils develop motivation, resilience, and a sense of achievement through tangible and meaningful results.
