Art Statement of Intent
Our Art curriculum has been written by staff at Christ Church and meets the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum. It is reviewed annually by the subject leader. In our Art curriculum, children are encouraged to become lifelong learners, exploring and expressing themselves creatively through the arts. They are provided with opportunities to experience and explore materials, skills and techniques in different ways as well as develop confidence and skill in drawing, painting, collage, printing and 3D work. It is important for children to see themselves as artists equipped with the skills to tackle creative and artistic challenges in the future.
We encourage children to explore ideas spiritually and emotionally, to create with purpose and to take their inspiration from both their community and the natural world. Art enriches our curriculum by connecting learning across subjects and celebrating individuality, culture and imagination.
By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils are confident, reflective artists who value creativity as a way of understanding and expressing themselves and the world around them.
Spiritual – art gives children a way of expressing what words cannot reach. Pupils respond to what they see and look closely, explore questions of identity and belonging through theirs and the work of others.
Community – Pupils exhibit, collaborate and respond to the art of their own and other cultures. They will consider how art shapes the places in which people live. We share our art work across the school and with Christ Church, celebrating art as a shared experience.
Outdoor – Using the natural world as a source of inspiration, pupils will have the opportunity to work with natural materials, looking at how light, dark, texture pattern and colour form the world around us. They will use this information to inform their own pieces of art.
Purposeful – Every unit has a clear outcome and reason. Pupils are introduced to skills which are developed through sequences of lessons year on year to deepen their understanding and techniques.
Enriching – Horizons are broadened through gallery visits and encounters with art from a range of periods, places and traditions. Children have the opportunity to explore works of art which look like theirs and those that do not.
Implementation
Art is taught across blocks throughout the year. Both discreetly and through links with history and geography.
Pupils work across drawing, painting, collage, printing and 3D work. Children experience the work of a range of other artists, craftspeople and designers from a range of periods and cultures and use what they see to help inform their own work and pieces of art.
Sketchbooks are used as a means to experiment and collect their findings. They use these to practice techniques and record their findings in the form of annotations. They will have access to choice of media
Impact
By the end of year 6, our pupils see themselves as artists. They select materials and techniques with purpose, talk about their own work and that of others using the language of art. They will feel confident to take creative risks and use art as a means of expressing themselves and what matters to them.
