This was an exciting period for our Anti-Racism group as we expanded and moved from being an open pupil-group to being a school council for anti-racism – The Anti-Racist Ambassadors. The children in the group decided on pledge points for being an Anti-Racist Ambassador (ARA) and then committed to following them. Over fifty of our year 5 and 6 pupils pledged to be an ARA each year, which is a huge number in a 2-form entry school, especially as meetings are during lunch times and the children give up their break to be a part of it. This demonstrates the desire of Christ Church children to be a part of a loving and equitable community, and the knowledge that they can make a difference in our school.
One of our first jobs was to design a logo to represent the group. See some of the designs here:
The winning design, chosen by the group, was this one by Eden and Naruna. This became the design for our ARA badges.

Monitoring Collective Worship Materials
We continued our daily monitoring of the images used in collective worship, and found them to be continually improving and representing the wide variety of cultures and ethnic groups within our community, As part of reviewing the collective worship imagery, some of the Anti-Racist Ambassadors collaborated with Spinnaker Trust (A locally based charity that supports schools across the south east of England with collective worship resources) to review the images used in their collective worship series ‘It’s Jesus’ (which we highly recommend.) The children helped to evaluate the wonderful examples of diversity in the images, and also helped to pinpoint areas that could be even stronger.
The work of the small group of pupils was then celebrated within the artwork of a new resource from spinnaker trust about values, as they became the inspiration for some of the images within the material.
We were then invited to evaluate the images for Spinnaker Trust’s new collective worship series, demonstrating fantastic insight and empathy. This was a special opportunity for our children. Many thanks to Emily from Spinnaker Trust for giving the children this opportunity to think critically and to provide challenge.
Sharing Our Work With Other Schools
At the end of the summer term, the ARAs were invited to share their work with other schools at the diversity and Inclusion training at the Southwark Diocese Board of Education, including senior school leaders and leaders of the diocese education board. This involved presenting their work and the impact, performing their song ‘Overflow’ and laying down a challenge to the leaders present – how can you empower your children to make change – not only in your school now, but also in the future as they move on to high school. The children were inspirational and gave some deep and thoughtful answers.
I learnt that an idea doesn’t have to just be an idea. When you see something that isn’t right, you can make a difference.

Anti-Racist School Award
In 2024, we were awarded the Anti-Racist Schools Bronze Award by CRED and Leeds Beckett university, and the work of our ARAs was a significant contributing factor.
Overflow: An Anti-Racist Song for our School Community
A small group of children from Year 6, together with Mr Lane, wrote and recorded this fantastic song celebrating the diversity of our school community. We love singing this song together in our collective worship times.
Lyrics Below.
In this Community,
We are all family,
If you just look around
Beauty can be found.
Different places, different faces
Together we are strong
Every culture, every language
Together we are one
Everyone, Everyone is welcome
Spread the love,
Let it overflow into this place
Celebrate, the beauty of creation
Let us share God’s love
Let it overflow!
We stand in unity,
Living in harmony,
All equal, all unique,
Fairness is what we seek.
No matter where you’re from,
India to Gabon,
You are mighty and you’re strong
People care – you belong
Our name is Christ Church
Cr – Cr – Cr Christ Church
Yeah that’s our name
And values are our game
Love, Courage, Honesty, Faith and Forgiveness,
With Love at the centre x 2
